Company History
Portland Historic Properties was founded August 2001, but the founders’ passion to restore older buildings to their former glory goes much deeper than that. Dave Hilts and Steven Marks have been renovating historic structures for over 20 years.
We bought The Belmont in August 2001 and spent the next three years renovating the entire building—all sixteen units.
Our largest project is Mount Tabor Garden Apartments which was acquired September 2008. We are currently in full swing renovating apartments as tenants change, refinishing wood floors, painting with newer colors, and updating plumbing and lighting. Window replacements for all units with high efficiency double paned windows were installed in 2009.
In 2010 we acquired a vacation rental in Loreto, Mexico which we will be sharing with our tenants free of charge. Visit the Mexico page for more info.
Our Philosophy
We only renovate and manage older inner-city buildings with unique character. Our goal is to highlight the period style of each building we acquire. However, functionality is important to modern life and mechanical systems like plumbing, wiring and windows require replacement when their useful life is over. We improve both the aesthetic and the mechanical features of each building we rebuild.
No one knows our buildings like we do, so we actively manage, maintain, repair and administer all of our properties, without the assistance of management companies. When a repair is required, we are on the job. Our tenant testimonials speak to the quality of our management.
We want great tenants who appreciate the work we do and who are consistent in their respect for the properties they live in and for their neighbors. When we get great tenants, we work hard to keep them. As their needs change, many of our tenants move with us from one building to another.
